Somewhat Disappointing
|
I replaced a worn-out 7 year old Sony camcorder with which I had become very comfortable. In shopping for a new one, I was attracted by the DCR-SR45's hard drive (no more tapes) and the small size. I regret not having read the other review, however. The absence of a view finder is a major problem in bright sunlight and the software provided for downloading and authoring DVDs (combining stills and music) exceptionally weak.
The manuals for the Handycam are marginal in value and, yes, there are three manuals. A paper "operating guide" comes in the box. It includes 35 pages of English instruction (plus 35 pages of Spanish). You also have to download a "Picture Motion Browser" guide and another 100+ page "Handycam Handbook".
As far as battery life, I was pleased with the 95-100 minutes I got each day. I have purchased a second battery pack for back-up, however. The zoom is terrific but almost impossible to get a steady shot when zooming. I will need to find a good, small tripod to use for those shots.
In short, the camera is easy to use and carry around. The built-in lens cover is a very nice feature. All the problems I've had have to do with the software for editing the videos and the guides are useless for troubleshooting. |
