Most of the negatives you may have read are likely true (the most notable being some noticeable distortion at the wide end when shooting scenes with straight lines), but unless you have a need for some hardcore technically precise images it simply isn't an issue. 99 percent of the people who use this lens will be elated with the image quality and the broad zoom range. In most cases you will take this lens along and no others. No need to change lenses or carry extras.
