Canon 500D 58mm Close up Lens for Canon S2 IS, S3 IS, Pro 1 and Pro 90 Digital Cameras description
Got a Canon EF lens, or a Pro 1, Pro 90 or S2 IS digital camera? Want to get up close and personal with your photography? If so, the Canon 500D Close-Up Lens is for you. Now you can convert your camera's lens into a macro lens that allows you to focus on very small subjects. This double-element, screw-on attachment threads onto the filter threads of your Pro 1, Pro 90 or S2 IS. Plus, it's also compatible with Canon's EF line of SLR lenses. With the lens in place, you'll be greeted with a new level of magnification and clarity. The lens brings the closest focusing distance of the camera to 500mm (approximately 19.7 inches). |

Excellent image quality, fits many DSLR lenses

I wanted to get my feet wet in macrophotography, but didn't want to buy a dedicated macro lens. Maybe that will come later. I tried extension tubes, but they were awkward and lost a lot of light. The Canon 500D Close Up Lens got rave reviews on several photography forums so I decided to try it.
The lens screws onto the front of your regular lens and works best on telephoto and zoom lenses. I used it on a Canon EF 70-300 USM IS DO zoom (58mm thread, other sizes are available) with a Canon 30D DLSR and used it on vacation to take photos of flowers at a botanical garden. (Note: it also fits many lenses from other manufacturers. I first read about it on a Nikon forum. All you need is a lens with a 58mm filter thread.)
I found the lens easy to use and I was very happy with the results. It's small and fit easily into my camera bag, where I would not have had room for a dedicated macro lens. Note that as with all macro lenses, the depth of field is VERY shallow, so correct focus is critical. Even then, you may find parts of the subject out of focus if they are even a few millimeters closer or further away. This is an important point to be aware of.
If you do a lot of macrophotography, then a dedicated macro lens (such as the [[ASIN:B00004XOM3 Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens ]] would probably be a better choice. But for the occasional closeup work, the 500D is a treat. |
