Standard practice
---As long as you go through the Windows Install/Uninstall to Install or Uninstall programs you should not be 'bloating' the computer. If you use the software installers that come with the software directly, when you uninstall, you wont be getting everything out. -- This is why Reformatting is a common solution to instantly speeding up your computer. Trust me.
---Also, update your Internet Browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera). Security, functionality, features, and bug fixes are commonly introduced weekly or monthly.
---Reset your computer at least once a week. Takes care of applications hiding in the background.
Extending the battery life.
---Turn the monitor brightness down.
---Turn off Wifi/Bluetooth
---Detach unused firewire or usb items
---Avoid DVD drive use
---Avoid watching movies or listening to music
---Run only the applications you need - you can extend this idea further by creating a hardware profile unique to power-saving. Research: "Hardware Profile" on Google.
About warranties.
---The first few days or weeks you'll be very cautious around your laptop, eventually you start to think of them as your favorite old shoes and you start abusing them a little more -- because you know they can take it. Difference is, shoes dont have warranties.
---Its easy for keys on the keyboard to come loose. After time, it happens.
---My dog chewed up my dvd-tray. Things happen. Get a warranty.

Make sure to get something with at least 1 gig of ram, wide screen monitor, built in Wifi, DVD (RW if you need it), and a Core 2 Duo is very nice to have. Power scaling on the Core 2 Duo is superb.
