It serves that purpose. I've made the mistake of taking this on short family trips where I don't want to lug my DSLR, and have been extremely disappointed in the pictures quality. Very noisy and dull looking even in well lit conditions. My previous point-and-shoot was a Kodak DX7440 which produced much much better pictures.
