Best 28mm Lens For Rangefinder Cameras Currently Available, But.....

| This is without question one of my favorite Leica M mount rangefinder camera lenses, and definitely among Leica's finest. The Leica 28mm f2 Summicron-M Aspherical wide angle lens is the best fast 28mm lens that's currently available, capable of making excellent images in both low light and bright light conditions. The 28mm lens has especially become a favorite one for fine art "street" documentary photography (Some recent examples of mine can be seen at www.tamarkin.com/gallery.htm, which are images from two New York City demonstrations held last year.) but it is also suitable for a wide array of applications ranging from architectural to landscape photography. It is definitely tack sharp wide open at f2, and its optical performance only improves slightly from f2.8 onwards. However, is it truly worth its extravagant price now that Leica has issued for approximately half price, a f2.8 Elmarit-ASPH lens that is more compact than this one, and performs nearly as well (A better bargain might be had too by purchasing instead the Zeiss ZM 28mm f 2.8 Biogon which currently sells for approximately one-third the price for the 28mm f2 Summicron.)? That's truly a difficult question to answer, and one which only you, the potential user, can answer well. Clearly if price is no object, then this superb lens is definitely worth acquiring. |
