Camera worked great until LCD broke inside
|
I am giving this a neutral review just before I ship this off for repairs.
The camera worked fine, and got a lot of use for the two and a half months that we have had it. It has a one year warranty - thank goodness!
My son used the video feature extensively and found it to be perfect for filming his ping pong ball movies (variation of beer pong, but without the beer). Our daughter took numerous pictures of herself, our pets and her friends. Today my son used it for a while then turned it on only to see that the LCD screen looked like a combination of a spider web and bulls-eye-like broken glass with some interesting iridescent lines for good measure. Quite a pretty design - unfortunately when I called Olympus, I was told that this is a common repair concern - that the LCD was "bleeding internally" and that most likely somehow the lens mechanism had gotten off track as a result as well. I will follow up once I receive the camera back from Olympus. If you are considering several cameras, however, you may want to be aware of this looming problem.
Good Luck whatever you decide! Maybe it's not a good choice for young videographers and photographers....
To follow up - I have now gotten in touch with Olympus and learned that my camera needs repairs costing $110.80. Since Olympus attributes the internal LCD problem to human mishandling, it does not fall under a warranty repair. Since I paid around $20 more for the camera, I am hard-pressed to justify paying this repair cost. I have 90 days in which to decide what to do. I will say that I had very little time to analyze the camera since it was in my son's hands mostly after he "borrowed" it from his sister. I did find the few times that I tried it out that the shutter speed seemed very slow as compared with my Sony Cybershot DSC-P200.
My son had the opportunity to compare the movie feature of the Olympus FE-280 with that of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ7, and he found the movie quality significantly better and sharper on the Panasonic. He commented that he could see the ping pong ball (the star of his movies) much more clearly. The Panasonic camera is less compact, but it does have some very good features, relatively fast shutter speed, but no sound on movie playback directly from the camera, and it devours AA batteries in the movie mode.
All in all, I am hesitant to replace this Olympus FE-280 with another one, or to fix my existing one. It sure is a pretty camera, but the price seems to be dropping at some retailers considerably, and this may be a sign that the camera is a disappointment to some. |
