The instructions are complex, but the photos taken with the automatic point and shoot setting are excellent, so that it's a question of how sophisticated one wants to get with the settings. The 18X power is terrific. The camera comes with plenty of excellent free software. I would get a spare battery to keep charged up at all times. A 4GB card is also helpful, though we have been having trouble with the card readers and have had to use the provided USB cable to download directly from the SD card still loaded in the camera.
