♥♥♥♥ Bawdy, Bloody and a Barrel of Fun.....
Yea, you could dismiss Beowulf as massively silly, but you would be missing the fact that it is completely entertaining and great fun. To simply see it as a big screen video game, because of the similar, though far superior, graphics is likewise to miss the point. The advances in motion capture technology are becoming increasingly intriguing and weirdly compelling in this nexus combining live action and actors with the unbridled imaginative freedom of animation. There is simply no other way to achieve some of the effects we see here, with sweeping camera moves, odd perspectives and shots that would be impossible or cost prohibitive to achieve in old film technique.

Bloody good fun, I was caught up in the energy and pure pizazz of Beowulf, reminiscent to me of the thrill of Ray Harryhausen's progressively more impressive stop motion work when I was a kid. I'm beginning to understand Robert Zemeckis's stubborn obsession with this new technology because now I see that this medium has incredible and unlimited potential. Worthwhile to the unsnobish lover of pure cinema fun and magic.
