For the money, it's not a bad DVD. But seeing as I haven't seen Brother Jimmy in over 12 years, well, he just seems...tired. The performances are, for the most part, good, but it appears as though the fun's gone out of it for JB. He moves about the stage and plays with the audience as only he knows how, but it seems forced. And when he breaks into "Tiki Bar" (he sits through all of it), it looks as though he's just trying to catch his breath.
The production is too big, too much stuff, the band (especially the drummer) seems to be mailing in their performances, and it just doesn't seem fun.
I give it three because it's Jimmy, but for any other artist, one at best for this. Maybe what the critical Parrotheads have said on his website is true, maybe "corporate Jimmy" has said enough. And that's hard enough to say. |
