Letters from Iwo Jima (Two-Disc Special Edition) description
Critically hailed as an instant classic, Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima is a masterwork of uncommon humanity and a harrowing, unforgettable indictment of the horrors of war. ♥♥♥♥♥ Harrowing and brilliant.
As much as I liked Flags of Our Fathers, I was not prepared for the emotional reaction I would have to this brilliant film. Eastwood is one of the greatest living directors (and will rank with the best of all time). He is consistently growing in scope and compassion; he's long past his Dirty Harry vigilante movies. I think only an Eastwood could have pulled off this movie showing the Japanese side of the battle of Iwo Jima. At the end I was crying, for these soldiers who knew they were dying and doomed, as well as for our soldiers who fought bitterly for that island. Most of all I cried for the horrendous waste of life in wars started by greedy and unscrupulous politicians, right up to today's Bushes and Cheneys who glorify war (but never fought themselves).

I couldn't forget (nor was I meant to forget) the horrors inflicted by the Japanese on the Allies or the Rape of Nanking. But this one focuses on the soldiers who are taught dying is great for their country, many of whom would just prefer to be home with their families and don't think the war is great.

The acting is first rate; so were the direction, the script, photography. In short, this film is damned near perfect. I cried for all the soldiers forced to die for something many did not believe in. As Dylan once wrote, every country thinks God is on its side.
