♥♥♥♥ Intense
As a Metheny fan for many years, I wanted to really love this album. The first three times I heard it, as well as the fourth time (live), I did love it. Especially live.

However, it was a short love affair because although this CD breaks new ground, and is dynamic and interesting, it feels ultimately more intelectual than emotional. It is less lyrical and flowing than other Metheny work, so if you like a more abstract and provocative style, you will like this a lot, and I think many do. For me, I find the abstract intelectual stuff more accesible if it is within a context that is still harmonic and beautiful and where the tune finds "resolution". The famous "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing" for me means, it still has to be beautiful and moving to be enjoyable in the long run.

In short, you will enjoy this a lot if you like provocotive cutting edge jazz/fusion. Just don't expect this to be like previous Metheny Albums which are much more positive, flowing, tuneful, and emotionally moving.
