♥♥♥♥ Gripping and Masterful
I think there's too much press about the sex scene. For some journalists, all they care about is if both main characters actually fornicated in this movie. They have actually forgotten that the sex scene is simply a fragment of the movie & if we look at it as one whole piece, this is actually a true masterpiece. The story brought us to Hong Kong and Shanghai during World War 2 and they are made as cosmopolitan as possible through portraying the diverse races living in both cities. It really brings us back to the golden days of movie making when Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Becall reigned supreme particularly in the fashion sense of the time. Rather than boring the readers with the story, suffice to say that the sex scene is necessary to portray the main characters yearning to feel alive and being human yet again. Because of what they do, Tony being the Japanese sympathisers whilst Tang being the resistance, they were at opposite ends of the spectrum and yet, they are more alike than you imagine. They are good at what they do and the rule of the game is distrust anyone and that they need to be cautious. Somewhere, somehow, there's a breaking point and that occurs when both of them collide at life junctions. Ultimately, they have to face the consequence. This is one of those rare movie that captivates my attention from beginning till the end. A very splendid cast and a truly oustanding achievement. Highly recommended.
