Leonard Cohen I'm Your Man description
Leonard Cohen--songwriter, poet, former monk, ladies man, and sharp dresser--receives a near-hagiographical treatment in I'm Your Man, a part concert-part documentary in which his work is interpreted by an array of singers. Cohen tributes are nothing new, what with Jennifer Warnes' Famous Blue Raincoat and the multi-artist compilations review details

bad cover versions & infrequent cohen appearances

I wanted to enjoy this DVD. I really did, but I quickly found myself fast forwarding past each lackluster performance so that I could try and forget how they butchered Cohen's songs. At the end of each performance is a short interview excerpt with Cohen himself, which (along with the last performance he does with U2) are the only worthwhile moments of this disc. Leonard (as usual) is entertaining and pure genius, but the cover versions are forgettable renditions of songs that I normally love.
What is wrong with these performers anyways? I can appreciate Nick Cave's quirky sense of lounge humor (for a short while), but the rest of them feel more like blasphemous freakshow acts. There have been MUCH better compilations of Cohen cover-songs released before (i.e. the "I'm Your Fan" tribute disc).
Rent this one for free from the library, and have your finger prepped for the fast forward button of your remote. And don't miss the short bonus interview with Cohen in the special features. I find it disparaging that this is how a filmmaker would choose to pay homage to such a master storyteller - a humble man who says so much by saying so little. |
