Begrudgingly. . .

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM had such potential. All-star cast. (Although Mickey Rooney is more annoying than chronic jock itch.) Dazzling special effects. And such a cool story. (What could be more fun than all the exhibits in the New York Museum of Natural History coming to life each night?)
Yet with all these pluses, this movie continued to squander its potential; it continued to turn myopic instead of majestic--nonsensical when it should have been whimsical. When the new night watchman (hapless Ben Stiller) gets rudely initiated into the nightly antics of the museum, chaos does indeed reign supreme, but it's chaos that feels more contrived and banal than chaos that is actually funny. And a "romance" between two wax figures? Come on. Don't try to put me on that suspension of disbelief freight train.
That said, this is a movie the whole family can watch (and there aren't a whole lot of them anymore). Stiller, Dick Van Dyke, Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, Ricky Gervais, even annoying Rooney, offer plenty of star power. As Stiller himself advises, NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM is a movie he can take his own small children to see. And for that I'll give this film three stars.
Begrudgingly.
