The return of Slade
|
Teen Titans was becoming problematic by this point. The show was relying on its standard formulas a bit too much (Cyborg learning he's still human) and the intentionally offbeat "wacky" episodes had a "been there, done that" feel. It was still a fun romp for kids, but there was less for adults to latch on to. Thank god for Slade.
Slade's return, under the service of the demonic Trigon, is the main story arc for this year. The five episodes make for some of the darkest storytelling in the Teen Titans' series, as Raven faces her destiny as destroyer of the world. Unfortunately the story kinda fizzles by the last episode, falling into standard plot conventions and tying things up with a neat, sugary bow. This was originally billed as the final season (hence the final 3-parter called "The End") before the show was renewed for one more. If this was the finale, I would've been very disappointed.
So there's strong material here, but some of it isn't quite as satisfying as it should be. If you own the other seasons, it's still worth a look. I'm also a little annoyed that WB thought a female character couldn't carry the front dvd cover on her own, hence the recycling of Robin who already appeared on season 1. |
