This is the cut off point for the old style sub movies.

| There are several really good submarine movies about World War II after this. Das Boot comes to mind as one of the best. But they are made in a different era with slicker production or in color. This one is only 13 years out from the war. It stars "the king" Clark Gable, also incidentially, a vet, & a young, rugged Burt Lancaster. There are also interesting character actors like Don Rickles & Jack Warden. In this one Gable is Capt. Richardson, an old sea-dog, desk bound after his ship was sunk. Lancaster is the up & comer Lt. Bledsoe, looking for his first command. Capt. Richardson literally steals the USS Nerko from Bledsoe & asks for him as his XO. The tension is evident & the crew is restive as Bledsoe was very chummy with them. They expected Bledsoe to be the new skipper. Gable drives the crew hard in training & he passes up easy targets. Eventually the method to his madness becomes clear to Bledsoe & the crew. Respect for the old man grows as he's incapacitated & Lt. Bledsoe must take command. They accomplish their mission ...but. One of the great, classic sub movies. |
