America's first family of dysfunction, the Simpsons, appear in all their depraved glory in this wonderful DVD compilation of their show's premiere season. We have here the very first season of the now nearly 19 years running Simpsons series. Here we have all those familiar classic episodes that we've seen rerun hundreds of times now like "The Telltale Head" and "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" that were a lot of folks very first impressions of the series. Little did we know in 1989 the heights of which the show would eventually reach! To this effect the DVD has a great nostalgic touch to it and will be easily digestable for the old school and long time fans of the Simpsons.
However this is the season where the series was still finding its voice, so yes it's all the episodes that are awkwardly animated, voiced, and the whole town acts totally out of character. If you're the casual "watch the show every once in a while" type of fan, this most likely won't be a very pleasing collection for you. It is the humble beginning of a geat series, but it's also very inconsistent with any of the other seasons that you have most likely grown accustomed to. With that in mind, you may want to check out season 3 onwards to see content more typical of the Simpsons material.
The DVD itself is quite good. Lots of features are newly put together, but it includes a lot of old supplement like TV spots and things like that as well. My only gripe is that there is no "Play All" feature for the episodes. Everytime an episode ends , you have to re-navigate back to the main menu to select the next one to watch. Other than that, I'd recommend this 1st season to the hardcore Simpsons fan. |
