Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story (Two-Disc Special Edition) description
The Pixar-like roll of Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad) continues with another sure-fire hit. In charting the meteoric rise, catastrophic fall and Lazarus-like rise of rocker Dewey Cox, Walk Hard parodies the classic Hollywood bio-pic, cashing in mostly on Walk the Line. John C. Like SCARY MOVIE,WALK HARD is fun to pick out what is being parodied!
|
The fun of parody films,is to to try to pick out all of the films and figures that are being spoofed.Along the way, if you can get a few really great laughs, get raunched, pick out all of the actors in disguise, see the cameo appearances and have virtually non-stop music covering 50 years of American Music History... and have a good time at it all, well then WALK HARD:THE DEWEY COX STORY is a least worth a solid one time look-see!
The plot (is there ever REALLY a plot in spoofs...c'mon???)is simple; John C. Reilly plays Dewey Cox, a country boy from Springberry,Alabama. He accidentally machetes his older and talented brother in half thus losing his sense of smell! (Stay with me,here!)His father hates him,his mother supports him,and Dewey finds his "voice" at the age of 14 that sets him on a 50 year "Hard Walk" through the world music industry.Along the way,the films of [[ASIN:B000G7PO6W '68 Comeback Special]], [[ASIN:B00000K3TX The Buddy Holly Story]], [[ASIN:B000LCF3HM The Beatles A Hard Day's Night]],[[ASIN:B00005JND5 Ray (Widescreen Edition)]], [[ASIN:B0009ETDDW Beyond the Sea]] and the latest [[ASIN:B000E8QVWY Walk the Line (Widescreen Edition)]] get skewered and roasted by writers Judd Apatow and Jake Kasdan ( [[ASIN:B000TZJBPQ Knocked Up (Unrated Widescreen Edition)]],[[ASIN:B000WZEZGI Superbad (Unrated Widescreen Edition)]],[[ASIN:B00005JNZU The 40-Year-Old Virgin (Unrated Widescreen Edition)]]).Dewey marries the child bride, has a slew of children, gets his big break, rises to stardom, illegally marries his singing partner (Jenna Fisher)gets into drugs and prison, follows with rehab, enters the psychaedelic age, meets the Beatles (absolutely THE MOST CLEVER SCENE in the film..Paul Rudd as John Lennon is pure stroke of comic genius),survives Disco...and eventually is rewarded with A Lifetime Achievement Award.
This film is very clever and at times hilariously funny...but that is where the rub comes with this film; it is uneven at best and uneven at it's worst (which is really not so bad).If people are expecting a true Hollywood biopic, you will have seen the wrong film.DEWEY COX is simple and pure spoof. If you enjoy the Christopher Guest spoofs,(,[[ASIN:B0000ALFVF Christopher Guest Collection (A Mighty Wind / Best in Show / Waiting for Guffman)]] you will even see many of his entourage at their best. The laughter was hardy in the theatre, but there were times when the silence was palpable. So,not great, but certainly worth an evening of fun and frolic. There is drug use, full frontal nudity of both sexes,so parents "THINK HARD!" |
