Decent theater performances
|

Twelve different performances are featured on this video which was shot "live" during the International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance Third Annual Awards show in California. It appears to have been a two-camera shoot, and while the light levels are a little low sometimes and the colors a little muddied, overall the visuals are relatively clear, and the editing from close to long-shots is fairly unobtrusive.
All of the performers are of professional caliber. The show incorporates a range of styles from American Tribal Style (Ultra Gypsy) to American Cabaret (Aziza; Suzanna Del Vecchio, Amaya), to more classically Egyptian (Sahra, Jasmin Jahal) to modern Egyptian pop (Jillina/Sahlala Dancers, Sabiba) to what I would term experimental-theatrical-fusion pieces (Shahrazad, Dondi& Titanya, Marguerite).
The diversity of performers and styles means that almost everyone should find at least a few numbers that they enjoy. Rather than comment negatively on pieces that simply were not to my personal taste, I will just comment on the pieces that I liked the most.
Jillina and troupe did a great suite featuring cane and drum solo that was fantastic on all levels. Sahra danced beautifully as always, although this is not my favorite show that I have seen her perform. Likewise Suzanna Del Vecchio, another seasoned and well-respected dancer did show off her incredible stomach isolations, but I have seen other performances that I far preferred by her. Aziza did a great and completely engaging show with a lot of charm and humor. Jasmin Jahal also did a wonderful Egyptian-style show and a great drum solo. Amaya's performance was quite enjoyable, and she gets extra points for an especially distinctive costume. These are the numbers that I am most likely to watch several times over. While ATS is not my preferred style, Ultra Gypsy was smooth and hypnotic.
Having this product on DVD where I could immediately get to the dancers I want to see would definitely be a plus. |
