Beowulf Part I Only - Grendel's Mom Absent
|
This account of the Beowulf saga ends with the feast in the mead hall in honor of Beowulf, which amounts to roughly the first third of the entire epic. Benjamin Bagby pulls off a feat easily the equal of the hero he celebrates. Bagby creates the illusion of someone spontaneously telling, in his native tongue (Old English), an astonishing story for the first time, all the while effortlessly accompanying himself on a 6-string harp. Swimming seven days in turbulent seas to hunt down and decapitate a sea monster is child's play compared to this. Bagby's convincing facial expressions and impressively powerful and varied baritone voice enrich the experience.
