More than a fairy tale
|
The Blue Bird is an unusual fairy tale that uses history as a backdrop. Based on Belgian Poet and Playwright Maurice Maeterlinck's play, "L'Oiseau bleu," the movie delves into virtuous values and human understanding in a world filled with turmoil, which occurred in Maeterlinck's time and the time that the Blue Bird was released, the Second World War in Europe.
The Blue Bird centers on two children, Mytyl (Shirley Temple)and Tyltyl (Johnny Russell) who are given the task by Fairy Berylune (Jessie Ralph) to find a blue bird of happiness, and the children's cat and dog, Tylo (Eddie Collins) and Tylette (Gale Sondergaard) become human and join the two children on their journey. Their imaginative and dream-like adventure takes them to the land of the past, the land of luxury, the forest, and the land of the future in hopes of finding their blue bird. The children meet the people who have been near and dear to them as well as new encounters in environments they have not been accustomed to, but coalesces deeper meaning and understanding of humanity into their lives.
Although the Blue Bird has dark moments that may scare little children, it is a definitely a film classic worth watching.
