City Heat description
This was supposed to be a blockbuster: the 1984 meeting of then-box-office icons Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood. Instead, the result was surprisingly flat, though Reynolds and Eastwood have their moments. The plot is a mishmash about bootleggers, gangsters, and kidnapping in the 1930s, with Reynolds as a free-wheeling private eye and Eastwood as a jaded cop who doesn't like Reynolds's style. The two stars exaggerate their well-established screen personas, which, in Reynolds's case, was already exaggerated enough. Directed by Richard Benjamin, it's weak stuff, despite a cast that includes Rip Torn, Madeline Kahn, Tony Lo Bianco, and Jane Alexander. The big running gag is about the size of Eastwood's gun. --Marshall Fine |

[Three out of Five stars] Good Direction by Rich Benjamin but wooden performances by top stars
|
Jane Alexander, with her facial features, is
no 'love interest'! Set in "thoities", Clint
is tough cop. Former partner, Burt is now av
gumshoe (with black partner, played well, thou
briefly by 'Shaft's Richard Roundtree, trying
to put last's years silly 'Q', with David Car-
radine behind him!), who is a smartass and the
false banter between them is somewhat annoying!
Clint's character plays piano (avergely) and
when his eye starts twitching, it time to watch
out! He punched Burt around and they exchange
insults, but there just ins't any chemistry.
They really do try however. Rip Torn, a ganster
who gets offed way too early (after his goons
kill off Roundtree), is the best thing in here!
Burt had his jaw broken during filming of this
lukewarm comedy because he was smashed by real
chair instead of fake one. Both his eardrums
and jaw were broken and it took him three years
to get healthy again. Must be bad for your ca-
reer to star with Clint film Dir. by Richard
Benjamin. Nice try at chemistry though. |
