Ah yes, the timeless story of two strangers from different worlds falling in love before they're able to cope with it. Okay, so maybe it's not Romeo and Juliet, but Girl in Lover's Lane does at least follow the major elements of the old Shakespearean tale. Drifter Bix runs into rich, sheltered runaway Danny, and the two pick a random town to settle in for a while. Bix has no idea that this is the place where he'll meet the girl of his dreams Carrie, and Danny has no idea that this is the place where he'll meet his first sleazy prostitute.
Bix loves Carrie dearly, but he knows he's not good enough for her. He's just a lowly drifter, and doesn't know anything else but drifting. The complication of Carrie in his life is too much for the poor dope.
While all this mess is going on Carrie's being stalked by Jesse, the town weirdo. He sees her with Bix, and he don't like it one bit. So he goes crazy and kills poor Carrie, and she dies in Bix's arms. Oh, how can such drama ever be resolved? The movie finds a way, but it's too bad the crucial confession scene is so botched.
I love this movie, even though certain things like unpolished visual transitions squeezed it into the Mystery Science Theater 3000 movies-to-make-fun-of library. Their name for Bix was Big Stupid, and I guess that's what I'll always call him. |
