As Good As Yu Yu Hakusho Can Be!
|
I have a few of the original releases of Yu Yu Hakusho but I didn't collect them all because they were just too expensive for me and I didn't have the room to carry 30+ DVDs. However recently, I saw this boxset and said that I'd pick it up. Well, this set is pretty much the same as the original, uncut single dvd releases, but it contains more episodes, it's much cheaper, and there are less dvds so more shelf space.
THE GOOD
-More episodes and less discs
There are 14 uncut episodes spread over 2 discs. Episodes 1-8 are on disc 1. And episodes 9-14 are on disc 2.
-Price
This can easily be obtained for under $20.00. It's a great deal considering the original releases cost around $20.00 and they only contained 3-4 episodes.
-Special features from the single releases are still present.
The Textless OP and ED features are still available and also the character profiles pages are still present.
-Small Packaging
This isn't some huge, cumbersome boxset. It's the exact same size as a normal, single DVD case!
-Uncut Episodes!
I know it's not a big deal to some, but I love this show uncut. I've barely seen any of these first episodes when they were on Cartoon Network years ago and they're amazing uncut.
-Great Audio and Video
Usually whenever I buy a Funimation dvd the video and audio range from passable to horrible. Yu Yu Hakusho is an exception to that. This dvd set has great looking video, the English audio track is mixed well. The English soundtrack retains all of the original BGM, SFX, and has a well done dub that is just as good as the original Japanese. I consider this a good, recommendable English dub. While it does stray from the original meanings of some situations, it is still very accurate an the voices fit the characters completely. Which I consider a rarity for Funimation since I hate their Dragonball dubs. The Japanese track has perfect subtitles and has a stereo soundtrack as well. For me, considering that Yu Yu Hakusho came out in 1992, having a stereo track for the Japanese language track is a huge plus since most anime TV series coming out at that time were in mono. Alternate angles that were on the original single discs releases still remain. Meaning if you want to see the Japanese credits instead of the English ones, then chose Japanese as the audio option before starting.
THE ALRIGHT
-The discs are hard to get out.
The above title says it all. They're pretty hard to get out.
-The Japanese subtitle track
Though I like what Steve Simmons does for Dragonball, the translations in Yu Yu Hakusho are a bit too literal for my taste. Even though I do like that honorific's are noted (ex. -chan, -san,-sama) and that attack, item, and place names are left in Japanese, sometimes I had to re-read what the subtitles said to see if they made any sense. Yusuke's speech patterns and word orderings are a little, off to say the least. Everytime he said something I would have to double-check to see if I read right. I'm not saying the subtitle work is poor, it's very excellent, it's just too literally translated.
-Chapter Breaks
They aren't easy to navigate around. Unlike the single vol. releases which were set up:
OP, Review/Title Card, Eyecatch, Preview, ED.
It's set up more like this:
OP, Review/Title Card, random spots in the episode, ED, Preview.
I don't know which is the "correct" placement of the Next EP. Preview either. It kinda took me back to see the ED before the preview because I thought they took them out, but they're still present.
OVERALL
There's nothing wrong with these releases at all. They're amazing! Even though they're essentially the single vol. releases repackaged with more episodes and cheaper prices, these are well worth the money of you haven't collected this series before. I'm buying the rest of the series this way and I'm very pleased with Funimation on this one. |
