I NEVER THOUGHT ICE COULD LOOK THIS BEAUTIFUL!

| ALTHOUGH it is a talkie, this docu-drama is very near to a silent film. Excellent on-location footage makes this otherwise unimaginative movie worth a look. What little plot there is involves an international rescue operation mounted to look for a lost researcher in the North Pole. Turns out he's alive, but stranded on an iceberg that is floating out to sea. Leni Riefenstahl decides to pilot her little Amelia Earhart aeroplane in search of her husband, but when she finds him crashes the plane and is stuck there with him. She doesn't do much else for the rest of the film. I especially love all the Eskimo at the end!! The film shows inept Europeans doing all they can to survive in that harsh climate, but the Inuit are totally in their element and just ride in like the cavalry on their kayak and save the day at the end. Although I watched only the German, this DVD also includes an American version of the same film. The cover on this edition makes the movie look a bit campy, but it takes itself seriously and there's no glamour-in-the-wilderness-type of stuff, despite all the pelt. |
