Indeed, Fellini has been described as 'superlative artist with little to say,' while his view of himself as a confused, deeply humane artist beset by a decadent, materialist world finally undercuts any claims to a generous tolerance of human weakness... If he revels in ugliness and folly, that may be because larger-than-life grotesques satisfy his taste for caricature and make for visually over-ripe fantasy... Certainly his earlier work offers enough evidence of a sharp eye for the absurd and atmospheric; his claims to artistic greatness, however, are severely limited by an insistence on the director's importance and by a weak grasp of character and narrative... One is left, finally, relating in an entirely subjective manner to the power and persuasiveness, or otherwise, of his private fantasies... |
