Inu-Yasha - Double Trouble (Vol. 21) description
Tsubaki, the Dark Priestess, tries to destroy Inu-Yasha by controlling Kagome. Summoning all her strength, Kagome hurls Tsubaki's curse back at her--just as Kikyo did decades earlier. But Kagome and her friends fail to destroy the Dark Priestess, who convinces novices Momiji and Baton to assist her. The mortal threat posed by Tsubaki gives way to slapstick comedy when the duo use shikigami (paper demons) to create attack dummies of Kagome and Inu-Yasha that look like enormous bobble-head dolls. Momiji and Baton aren't bright: they assume Shippo is too cute to be a demon and Kaede is too ugly to be a priestess. But the comic relief is short-lived, as Tsubaki prepares to unleash a centuries-old demon. Amid the confusion, no one notices that Tsubaki has acquired nearly all the shards of the Shikon Jewel. (Unrated, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon |

Breaking the curse
|
'Double Trouble' continues the saga of the dark priestess Tsubaki begun on the last episode of the previous disc. Overall, a good mix of action and comedy.
In 'Kikyo and the Dark Priestess' (episode 61), Kagome's still under Tsubaki's curse, and is taking a turn for the worse. She tries to remain in control while Tsubaki, controlling her, tries to make her kill Inu Yasha. Kikyo confronts Tsubaki and we learn more about what happened between them in the past.
'Tsubaki's Unrelenting Evil Spell' continues the showdown between the priestess and our heroes. In this episode, Kagome has an interesting little daydream in which we get to see versions of modern-day Miroku, Sango, Shippo, Kaede, and Kikyo (even Kirara makes an appearance).
Even though the showdown ends, this story doesn't. Tsubaki flees to the temple at which she originally trained to become a priestess in 'The Red and White Priestesses.' There she tricks Momiji and Botan, two young priestesses who trained under Tsubaki's own master, into holding off Inu Yasha and the others while she sets in motion her next plot against them. This episode, while still maintaining the action, also mixes in a healthy amount of comedy that hasn't really been seen recently. Momiji and Botan's moralistic troubles with attacking demons as cute as Shippo and Kirara elicit giggles, as will their 'ferocious' shikigami attacks.
As for extras, besides the usual sketches, cast list, and original Japanese promos, there's also instructions on how to make your own shikigami. Well, your own paper dolls, anyway. There's nothing in the instructions about how to make them move, or anything... |
