♥♥♥♥♥ In total, better than the first collection
This package is also better than the first at highlighting the reason TV critics thought that the show was uneven. It contains the series' best and worst episodes.

The "humanizing" episodes following episode number six or so show what happens when a good thing is obstructed by a network that thinks too much in the present. Most of its jokes weren't funny and at times they seemed cruel. Garland could not have easily tolerated it. The "tea for two" segments seemed like good ideas that were not well conceived (but somehow Garland actually gets Leo Durocher to sing on TV - unbelievable).

These complaints aside, those episodes are still worth watching. The good parts - besides Garland's songs, of course - were found with her guests. None of them in this collection seem like an awkward pairing with her, and her on-air encounters with Mel Torme even have a little chemistry - a testament to their professionalism, considering that they reportedly couldn't stand each other.

The best ideas in the show were actually Judy's herself. The concert format eliminated both uncertainty with how the numbers should be presented and the difficulties with the stage's bad acoustics. The patriotic numbers are a gem nowadays, proving that patriotism is no fad, like some network executives apparently thought. (She had to fight hard to get them in.)

The final episodes - barring the unfortunate no. 26 - are so thunderously amazing at times they surpass every other thing I have seen Judy in. She sings new songs, providing a sort of freshness to someone who had too much repute for nostalgia. But she also sang the old songs, better than I have ever heard her previously perform them. Her voice, which seemed like it was finally wearing out during the series, now had a booming sonority. These shows didn't just validate her as my favorite female singer. They made everything I have said about her before seem like an understatement. Now that I have both packages it will be a goal to watch all the episodes in order of their tapings so I can watch the show get better and better.

(Oh yeah - I am also not fond of the seven-disc package formatting, but after seeing the shows I find that it's really quite a negligible matter.)
