If you are not at least fairly competent in Japanese, do not buy this DVD. Period. These are by far the worst subtitles I have ever seen on any foreign movie; even the names of the characters are mistranslated. It is often impossible to deduce the meaning of the subtitles, and sometimes they completely misconstrue the dialogue. For example, "nashonarisuto da yo," which means "I am a nationalist," is translated as "I am international." It's that bad.
If you've spent a year or two in Japan, however, it's easy to piece together the meaning of the sentences from what Japanese you understand and what the subtitles say. But without prior Japanese study (or Chinese study, since there are also Chinese subtitles), I strongly advise against purchasing this DVD.
The movie itself is really great though, and includes a twisting, engaging plot of betrayal and power struggles along with more personal stories, set to a fantastic soundtrack. If the subtitles were even remotely passable, I would give the DVD five stars. |
