| This is an excellent document of an extremely important music scene captured at its height. The outstanding footage of Ray Barretto is particularly meaningful since he passed so recently. I really like the style of street/life scenes from Spanish Harlem interspersed with concert footage -- it shows the music as an integral part of the culture.
Two technical problems with this particular issue of the DVD should be noted. First, it appears to be mastered from a VHS tape, so the image quality and sound quality are somewhat dull. If it were a bootleg, this would be expected. More problematic than this, the film ends abruptly during a scene where Symphony Syd is about to introduce the Fania All Stars. Because I haven't seen the complete film, I don't know how much is missing, but needless to say, an incomplete film is an incomplete film and buyers should take this into consideration. --Carter Van Pelt, Aug. 2006 |
