Legend of Crystania: The Motion Picture description
This three-part OAV is set in the same universe as Record of Lodoss War, but there's little overlap between the stories. The choppy and often difficult-to-follow narrative traces the effort to resurrect the evil wizard-king Barbas. Opposing the attempt are Sir Redon and his retinue, a dark elf, the twins Irim and Kirim, and assorted other warriors. The characters wander through Crystania as the story builds to the inevitable confrontation in which Barbas is defeated not by Redon, but King Ashram, who's spent the last 300 years trapped in the World of Chaos. The filmmakers fail to give the characters distinct identities: at the end of "A New Beginning," Kirim turns into a swan who will carry souls to paradise, but the viewer has no idea how or why he's making this transition. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up: Violence, grotesque imagery. --Charles Solomon |

The Aftermath of Lodoss, the Accursed Island
|
Sound:
The english voices are fairly decent but not it's strength, but trust me they are good enough. The music is it's greatest strength in terms of sound, the music is beautiful.
Visuals:
The art work and animation is fairly decent too, at least for its time. There is some blood and realistic combant and movements.
Overall, it's pretty good.
The Plot:
Well, first you have to know that The Chaos Ring is a sequel to The Legend of Crystania - The Motion Picture. You need to watch that first before watching this.
Even more important, before watching any of the Crystania films, you should watch the original 13 episode series of Record of Lodoss War and it's sequel Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight which is 27 episodes.
The Record of Lodoss War is where it all begins, but it's not perfect. If you want to watch everything with the story flowing well, here is the following:
Record of Lodoss War: Episodes 1-8. Start with episode 2-5, then episode 1 and then from 6-8. Episode 1 is actually after episode 5, why they did this I don't know.
Anyway, after episode 8, I strongly recommend you stop watching the last 9-13 episodes and immediately begin watching Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight. It takes place directly after episode 8 of the original series.
The reason for this is because episodes 9-13 from the original series follow a different story and is entirely inconsistent with the rest of the manga books and the newer anime series due to time constraints.
In the end of episode 27 from Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight....Lord Ashram and Pirotess set off for a new world.
The new world they find is the land of Crystania. Watching both films of Crystania is the story about Ashram's people and a little about what happens to Lord Ashram and his beloved Dark Elf, Pirotess (Cheru).
In the reviews, people say Lord Ashram is a villain, but this is not correct. Without giving much away, in the series Record of Lodoss War, Lord Ashram loves his kingdom and its people, the people of Marmo. He's known as The Black Knight and his kingdom invades Lodoss from their island and for this people assume they are "evil". They wanted to find a better place to live. This was the wish of Lord Ashram's king, Emperor Beld. It was the people of Lodoss that were intolerant of Marmo but it's focused on these people in Lodoss with their self righteous views, which makes them appear "good".
Neither of them are evil, Marmo is not a true villain. Both sides have their own goals.
Some people might argue that some of the Marmo are evil, this might be correct, but you have to see this for yourself.
However, no mistake about it, Lord Ashram is not a true villain. Lord Ashram has his goals and defends the people of Marmo with his life and that's why in the end he set out to find a new land that would accept his people, the land of Crystania.
So when you watch The Legend of Crystania, Lord Ashram seems to be a hero and indeed he is. To the people of Marmo, he's their savior.
Personally, Lord Ashram is my favorite character from the entire series and epic saga of Record of Lodoss War / Crystania. Regardless of which characters are focused on more, I must say that Ashram is THE MAN.
That being said, Crystania begins from this point on.
Remember the order. Record of Lodoss War 2-5; 1; 6-8 Chronicles of the Heroic Knight 1-27 Crystania The Motion Picture and then The Chaos Ring.
Feel free to do as you like, but this is how the story flows properly. I hope my background story helps you make a decent decision. |
