Not a bad movie,
|
It seems as though everytime A Nightmare on Elmstreet comes up, you hear a lot of raving about how bad part 2 sucks. Well it had been a few years, so I rewatched it again recently only to find that this movie isn't half bad! As a follow up to the original, I can understand why this wasn't received well. As a movie on its own, its pretty good for what it is.
Here we follow teenage Jesse whose family has just moved into the infamous house on Elm Street. Jesse begins having nightmares which eventually leads him into being possessed by Fred Krueger. This movie features some pretty good acting, Mark Patton plays Jesse very convincingly. The dialogue, although it's not oscar material, almost sounds like a real conversaton that could be taking place. We also have a great appearance by Clu Galager as Jesse's tightwad father. You can definietly identify with his father-knows-best stereotype lines.
I guess the problem with this movie is the pacing/story. The whole film is centered around Jesse's psychological descent. Kills are far and few in between. Finally the last 15 minutes something begins happening storywise, but it all just culminates into a weak, anti-climactic ending. It never really explains why or how Freddy is able to possess Jesse. I assume it's just because they live in the notorious house, which is sort of weak. While we're talking about Freddy, I think the most misleading thing about this movie is that it's called Freddy's Revenge. The fact is, he doesn't get revenge on anybody! In fact Freddy probably only gets about 10 minutes of actual screentime here, and it's pretty lame. (He knocks a decorative plate of the wall to show that he's angry). About the implied homosexual stuff in the film, it's really not extreme enough to get upset over. The gym coach was kinda weird I'll admit, but I got over it.
All in all, Freddy's Revenge isn't all that great a movie. It's low on Freddy, low on kills, weak story, bad ending...But I wouldn't say it's the worst Nightmare on Elmstreet movie. So far I reserve that spot for Freddy's Dead, although I haven't wached the supposedly horrific part 5 yet. If you like the series, it's worth a watch.
