Welcome to the Country Life In Yamagata!
|
Hayao Miyazaki finds the country ecological life ideal. That's shown in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind or Highharbor village in Future Boy Conan. This film introduces organic farming, pesticide-free method of farming. Due to the filmmaking of Porco Rosso Miyazaki has limited involvement in this film otherwise surefire script. Taeko's 10-year old elementary school life is almost identical with Satuki in My Nighbor Totoro or a bit like Whisper of the Heart. Japanese may find it a bit like seeing the episodes of CHIBI-MARUKO-CHAN, popular late 60s based kid animation drama. Latter half of the drama is so beautifully shown that we might surely lured to the country life in Far-and-Away Tohoku 17th century poet Basho loved so much. (No wonder the drama picks up some of the Basho poems). Country life landscape was vividly described by Kazuo Oga known by his My Neighbor Totoro or Princess Mononoke works.
A series of Japanese country-life based works with little Miyazaki involvement, however, turned out to be milestones to Princess Mononoke because these 90s works may find some correlation.
Verdict: So beautifully shown but country-life that hassle-free?
Rating: 85 out of 100. Well-made Takahata work.
Recommended for: Ghibli fans who favors drama-featured animation works. |
