♥♥♥♥♥ Hero of my hero
I was listening to the "extras" section of this DVD. Sam goes off on a tangent talking about his heroes - Jean Luc Ponte, John McLaughlin, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, John Hartford, Bela Fleck. And I realized why I was drawn to Sam. These are some of my favorite musicians and writers. Sam ranks among the top in my book.

I got into Sam through his association with Bela Fleck. I soon started buying all of Sam's CDs. The pinnacle of my fascination with Sam and his band was my very first Telluride festival in 2007. I was absolutely blow away with the talent and showmanship of the entire band.

This DVD was recorded before the Telluride festival but is fairly close to the same band. Even though I have rated this as 5 stars I have to say that it does seem more subdued than the Telluride experience (Sam, you really need to spearhead the effort to get Telluride on DVD!!!). But the performance is flawless and moving. The selection of music is great, flowing from ethereal middle eastern timings and patterns to straight out bluegrass to jazz to blues and rock and roll.

And the extras let you in on the side of Sam Bush that everyone knows about. He's just your average Joe that knows how to play a hell of a mandolin, guitar and fiddle. Sam talks about the songs and his instruments. The explanation for "Laps in Seven" is worth the entire DVD.
