Roxy Music on DVD: Good Fun!
|
Here is a summary of Roxy Music's DVD releases:
2003 LIVE AT THE APOLLO (*****Five Stars): Universally praised concert DVD of Roxy Music's 2001 Tour (their first in 18 years). The surprise here is that Roxy Music is playing with the enthusiasm of a brand new band with something to prove. Features songs from their entire career with a decided focus on the first four albums. Set list: Virginia Plain, Ladytron, Re-make Re-model, For Your Pleasure, In Every Dream Home a Heartache, Editions of You, Street Life, Mother of Pearl, A Song for Europe, Out of the Blue, Love is the Drug, Both Ends Burning, Oh Yeah, My Only Love, Dance Away, Avalon, Tara, While My Heart is Still Beating, Jealous Guy.
2004 THE HIGH ROAD(***** Five Stars): Concert DVD of Roxy Music's 1982-83 Avalon-era tour. Features songs from their entire career but with a decided focus on the romantic swooning sounds of the Avalon (LP) and High Road(EP) songs. This is a real crowd pleaser for fans of the late seventies and early eighties smoother Roxy sound. This DVD is sometimes maligned for being a too polished affair but this features Roxy's musicianship, if not its avant-garde edginess, at its best. You can hear the entire set list if you purchase the Frejus Live CD (which includes more songs and more of the extended jams from this same tour).
2005 ROXY MUSIC/T.REX LIVE (***** Five Stars): Features INCREDIBLE Live performances of six Roxy Music songs from the German TV show Musikladen. Five of the songs are taken from their first 1973 appearance on the show: (a low energy) Do The Strand, (a rollicking) Editions of You (with a very energetic neo-crypto anarcho primitivist Eno playing analog synth on the left & debonaire rock sophisticate Ferry organ on the right side of the stage), (Ferry goes into a trance to sing) In Every Dream Home a Heartache (and Manzanera finishes the song with a blistering guitar line), Re-Make Re-Model (features Mackay's considerable talents with sax and other wind instruments), & (the set closes out with) Virginia Plain. And then (for some inexplicable reason) a perfomance of All I Want is You, taken from a 1974 appearance on the show. Highlights: *OUTRAGEOUS OUTFITS! Brian Eno wearing his infamous peacock feathers while noodling around with his keyboards, synthesizers and tape machines. Manzanera, in an equally outrageous costume, is a revelation on guitar. Mackay is wearing green satin martian pants and huge silver platform shoes, during Re-Make Re-Model he turns his sax upside down and jams some crazy note out of that thing. Ferry wears a white tux, that is until Virginia Plain when he wears a black glittery jacket.*
Plus five T.Rex songs (which look like the kind of videos you see on VH-1 classic rock, ie it looks like the band is performing inside a swirling psychedelic kaliedoscope): Jeepster, Life's a Gas, Ride a White Swan, Jewel, Twentieth Century Boy. If you're an Eno fan (and a T.Rex fan) this is the e- ticket!!!!!(Upside: This is usually available for about $5-$10 dollars).
2005 MUSIKLADEN (***** Five Stars): This disc features all of the songs played on Roxy Music's four Musikladen appearances. So it includes all of the performances mentioned above plus: Pyjamarama, Amazona, Mother of Pearl, Psalm, Street Life, Out of the Blue (featuring Eddie Jobson on electric violin), If It Takes All Night, Over You & Oh Yeah (the latter two are lip-synched). Highlight: Jobson on electric violin! (Downside: at $30.00, its expensive).
2006 THRILL OF IT ALL (***** Five Stars): This is a compilation of Live performances (from the Siren & Avalon eras), tv appearances, videos & promos. Ok, post-1975 Roxy is not as good as the pre-1975 Roxy, but its still Roxy Music. Incredible collection!
