The Rurouni Kenshin series has had many good episodes. It pains me to say, however, that this is one of the last discs with the quality we have come to enjoy and the story telling of Nobuhiro Watsuki (the last disc based on the manga is the next one). This disc happens to have some of my favorite episodes; the Sojiro battle is, in my opinion, the second best in the series.
Episode 53: The conclusion to the "Destruction Army". Not a bad episode but it still was a bit over dramatic and the fight scene wasn't all that great.
Episode 54: Here begins one of the highlights of the Kyoto Arc. From what we know of Sojiro, he is a talented assassin and shows no emotion other than happiness. His Tenken defeated Kenshin once... but it's not enough this time. Here is revealed Sojiro's other talent, the one which allowed him to kill Okubo from inside a moving carrige: Shukuchi. With this footwork, Sojiro's movement is faster than Kenshin and of Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu. The artwork changes abruptly at the start of the episode but it becomes more consistent as it continues.
Episode 55: At last we learn how Sojiro has come to be. You cannot help but feel sorry for him after learning his past. I do not wish to spoil anything in this episode, I won't say anything else.
Episode 56: The conclusion to the battle. It is very well done; the camera angles and arwork are great. The finale is only the first half, however. In the remainder, Sojiro takes his leave and we finally get closer to Kenshin and Shisio's fight.
Episode 57: This is the low point of the disc. It is filled with flashbacks and feels very repetitive. Though it does start the final duel, it leaves a lot to be desired. It would have been better if the explanation of how everything has led up to where it is now was shorter.
Overall, this is worth purchase. It contains one of best battles in this season and gives us the beginning of the end of the Kyoto Arc. The Japanese voice acting is very well done, I cannot bear to listen to the English. The extras aren't much though. Rurouni Kenshin has been a popular series for a while now, watch this and find out why. |
