♥♥♥♥♥ Sailor Moon Heaven! (Stop Calling It A Bootleg!)
Thanks to U.S. companies scare tactics, a lot of people seem to consider Chinese DVD imports "bootlegs". They aren't. They are a product of our governments bizarre trade policy with China. These are legal to own, buy, sell, feed to your cat, etc.

The product (anime) is Japanese. U.S. companies buy rights to certain anime and then encode it to our region and then copyright it. If you were to make a duplicate disc of a Geneon Region One DVD then yes - that is an illegal bootleg. THESE have nothing to do with that. Never mind the fact that no company holds the rights to Sailor Moon ANYWAY anymore, this DVD boxset (and all those like it) were made without U.S. encoding (in China) so therefore are perfectly legal. That's why Amazon allows them to be sold (duh!).

If someone in our government ever ties up loose ends (or even bothers to pay attention to) our trade policy with China, maybe that will change someday - but right now it's thousands of rich corporate American piggies feeding at the Chinese trough and so long as Wal-Mart exists, things won't. There is however a MORAL dilemma, I suppose - but unless you refuse to buy anything that says "Made In China" on it, this doesn't really matter. (Workers in China are modern-day slaves in a big way - the more you learn about it, the sicker - and angrier - you get. )

Though I personally won't ever set foot in a Wal-Mart, I DID buy this and a couple other Chinese import DVD sets - only because it's the only possible way to GET them (Sailor Moon, of course) or because of price gouging (Mysterious Play). (And did you ever wonder why the Chinese anime box sets are so ugly and drab? It's because the product hasn't gone through our American marketing system where they go nuts with the colors and breastsm naking it more saleable to all us otaku)

But anyway - sorry if I got too political, but I really am aghast at just how unethical and truly unbelievable our trade policies have become over the past ten or eleven years (Remember when Japan was our sworn enemy back in '91 because we were selling them anything and everything under the sun and we had that big Buy American campaign? Now we've got the China Connection.)

So don't worry about buying this or any other Chinese-borne DVD set - IF that's what you're setting out to buy that is. Sometimes, a seller will send off a Chinese copy when you THINK you're purchasing a U.S. copy so check the seller's description carefully. I got swindled on my Haibane Renmei box set and am STILL angry about it. This is because there ARE drawbacks to buying a Chinese version...

The drawbacks between a Chinese and U.S. copy are that the picture quality is nowhere near as good. Chinese copies look a bit better than if you were to burn a movie, TV show, news broadcast, etc. onto a blank DVD in LP. It still looks and sounds OK - but the U.S. version will always be better. This is why it's a good idea to only buy Chinese boxsets of anime that you know you'll NEVER be able to afford or if there simply is no other alternative. Like say, Sailor Moon. The other drawback I already mentioned - the boxsets are drab and lifeless compared to what our anime companies design.

SO - as for THIS boxset, Sailor Moon Collection One: Drawbacks aside, I am just in a rapture over it. It's a boxset containg three kinda-wide plastic DVD cases. The first case (Part One) holds 4 DVD's that collect episodes 1 - 38 (IIRC). The second case holds Part Two - the next four DVD's with episodes #39 - 82 (IIRC. Basically it's seasons one and two.)
The THIRD disc is why I bought this in the first place - Sailor Moon S complete on three discs. Because Sailor Moon is a hand-drawn anime (and kinda-old) I knew it wouldn't look all that clear. I bought the Sailor Moon R movie a long time back and even though it's Geneon Pioneer, it doesn't look all that spectacular. Having said that, I was VERY happy with the way it looked, probably because I was expecting a grainy experience. The sound was good and the subtitling was likewise. (It IS in Japanese-only with subtitles, but that's my prefernce anyway. I love the Japanese language AND I've heard Sailor Moon dubbed in English. You're better off with Japanese, I promise you.

***********************************************
UPDATE: Added March 18 2008 - Upon finishing the first disc, I have to say that there are a lot of times that the film DOES get grainy looking. And if you put in the disc after watching something else on TV, the sound sounds very muddled (it's in mono too). HOWEVER, I wasn't unhappy due to the fact that I was enjoying the show so much.

That's the bad news - now for the GREAT news. I mentioned before that I wanted this set primarily for Sailor moon S. Before I owned this, all I had was a copy of Sailor Moon R The Movie which I picked up used at a Blockbuster years ago and the first Pioneer volume of Sailor Moon S That volume is what got me hooked on Sailor moon to begin with. SO I figured I'd do a comparison between my Pioneer copy and the first disc from my Chinese set. They look and sound exactly alike - the picture and sound are perfect in every way - and considerimg there's 13 episodes on each disc in the Chinese set, that's pretty amazing. The only difference is that the subtitles are colored white instead of yellow (or was it the other way around? Whatever - they're different colored. Just thought I should mention that.)

The other piece of good news is that the entire Sailor Moon S series in this set gives you the option of watching it English Dubbed. This doesn't matter to me as I prefer the Japanese, as I said, but some of you might wan to know this if you too are a fan of the S season. That's it for news... I haven't checked out the second casing that holds Part Two, so i don't know if any of that looks better or sounds better than the first volumes or if any of that is English dubbed either.
END OF UPDATE*************************************************

If you're a huge anime fan and have always wanted Sailor Moon in your collection then you need to buy this NOW. It felt like I got the Holy Grail of anime when I opened it up and watched the first episode, and the last time I felt that was when I finally saved up enough money to buy my copy of Gungrave Fully Loaded. But this is by far the best $75 I ever spent on anime before. If I love this show as much as I loved Azumanga Daioh and Strawberry Marshmallow, I'm going to buy the second boxset too.
