too long and tedious at times

| "We Were Bored" is perhaps a more witty title for this review, but in fairness this movie has some good moments. The story follows the usual plot: see green soldiers trained, get a peek at their personal lives, get thrown into battle unprepared and undermanned, kill off a few. Mel Gibson is in over his head in this role and comes across as a cheesy stereotype. And his sergent major is a flimsy cardboard cutout of a character. But my biggest problem is the long and tedious battle scenes. I know this is supposed to be based on a true story, but a little editing would have been welcome. The final slap to the face is that the HD DVD transfer is one of the worst I have seen (and I've seen nearly all of them). This is not one of those puny combo discs with only 15 GB, this is a dual layer 30 GB disc and the picture is pretty noisy even in fairly bright scenes. Maybe some of it is film grain and there for artistic purposes, but the bottom line is that this looks no better than a regular DVD. Not a great way to sell an expensive new format. |
