| "Super Mario Brothers" is proof that awful movies based on video games were being made before Uwe Boll came onto the scene. It's VERY loosely based on the whimsical,fun Nintendo game. Bon Hoskins&John Leguizamo star as Mario&Luigi. As in the game,they're out to save the princess. They're plumbers. However,they go down the drain (how fitting,like the movie),ending up in a parallel universe where dinosaurs rule. Dennis Hopper has the thankless role of the dinosaur/human tyrant who menaces the princess through his hammy acting. Hopper,once a mainstay of trippy '60s movies,has been in naff movies,like "Waterworld" and this one. The plumbers fight their way through the dystopia. Simple plot,but oh so boring.
"Super Mario Brothers" deserves a MST3K treatment. As it is,it's a plodding bore. Mario&Luigi may be out to save the princess, but only Mike Nelson and the 'bots can save this movie! |
