Great course, easy and productive training

I'm by no means technology professional but since I do video editing on OSX as a part of my daily routine (I do events and weddings) I have decided to learn more about UNIX and networking. It is my second review on "UNIX on DVD" series, the first one was on the "UNIX Essentials" DVD but I'll mention it later.
As far as my personal experience suggests, learning network technologies for a beginner represents enormous challenge and often it may be very discouraging as it is so comprehensive (initially I was overwhelmed just by the list of protocols! ), It implies familiarity with many details ( like one nice book suggested that I know already what is Ethernet or CSMA/CD ), and requires understanding of numerous concepts (or it is common to mention encapsulation and leave it up to you to figure it out) and so on. There are many, many books on the networking and TCP/IP but near all of them are notoriously difficult to penetrate. I was starting for four times read different books and eventually had realized that all of them implied some previous training. Not only that, but usually there's huge gap between theory you learn and the ability to apply that theory in practice (like many books teach some "general" stuff then go figure its relevance to your system). Not anymore.
This DVD course shows all the stuff in action. It teaches all the necessary concepts and closes the gaps with immediate examples, practical commands, on screen illustrations etc. I like the attention this course pays to physicality of the networking. This course takes a beginner into much revered advanced level, discusses sniffer, protocols, analyses commands output, shows how to read and understand the messages by some very easy to follow lessons.
It is a second DVD course I have from "UNIX on DVD" series, the first one is "UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" and it is as much helpful and thoughtful. This networking course also is much refined technically as the sound and image are of much better quality, neither was much of problem before but this course is of notably higher technical quality. If you do the firsts steps in UNIX it would be my recommendation go through "UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" DVD course first as this DVD concentrated as the title states "TCP/IP and UNIX Networking". Generally speaking, learning from Boris is a pleasure. I found his first course to be extremely helpful and purchased this one under that impression. Many people admire his DVDs as a very efficient shortcut into technologies and opportunity for jobs that would be hardly attainable otherwise. I have not been looking for an employment but there's no doubt the course fulfills the duty and generally speaking I The magic of his videos that he knows the precise path to put you on as he is aware on every point what may impose a difficulty and explains all the major ideas before you hit them.
No doubt it is not an exhaustive training on TCP/IP but there's hardly anything that can be. This DVD course provides an immeasurable advantage though: it takes virtually complete dummy out of the street and in some days in "follow me" style makes this newbie speaking in professional terms, using advanced commands and performing complex tasks. This course, as you will discover it suddenly, has another very important side effect it will make possible to you following some quite sophisticated technical books with relative ease. I had some books on UNIX and networking (actually I purchased quite few ;) and simply could not force myself go further over couple of pages. Now I can read them normally, it is not a torture for me anymore. As I mentioned before I liked the diplomas and framed both. (and BTW I can recommend "UNIX System administration handbook" by Evi Nemeth it is a nice book you can read after watching this one). I also have sent some questions to Boris and he replied promptly.
Great course, comprehensive, easy and productive training, very recommended. |
