Another nail in the TCM coffin...
|
And what a big nail it was! New Line Cinema's second strike, TCM: The Next Generation, took the series to a new low. To this day, TCM: The next generation still holds the #92 spot on Internet Movie Database's list of the 100 worst movies ever, and even that's a compliment! I have to say that I'm surprised they even bothered to transfer this movie onto DVD. This flick shows why The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was an amazing movie, but a horrible series.
I have said this before, and I will say it again: Every TCM movie released by New Line Cinema has the same plot!: Protagonists are driving down a rural Texas road for whatever reason, the car crashes/breaks down, they are assaulted by the cannibalistic clan. This installment doesn't do anything to disprove my theory. The DVD synopsis does in fact describe this as a remake, so I guess that explains the ripped off plot, and why it has no connection with the previous Leatherface: TCM 3. However if you weren't aware of that, this movie is just one big continuity error.
In this one, we are treated to yet ANOTHER crazed family we have never seen before with the exception of Leatherface. I notice that a lot of reviewers dislike the fact that Leatherface is a toned down, womanizing psycho in this installment, but believe me, that's the LEAST of this flick's problems. This is a confusing, nonsensical, poorly executed retelling of the original. The Next Generation also features the now more renowned Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConnoughay. I wouldn't say they were miscasted, seeing how this was very early in their careers, but Renee just doesn't deliver. As much as I hate to admit it, Matthew's character "Vilmer" was pretty well acted I think. Maybe a bit overacted, but he brings the best out in the movie. I'm sure these two are still trying to live this monstrosity down.
Listen folks, coming from a fan of 10+ years, this film is a disgrace. Just take a look at the bulk of these reviews, the truth has been spoken. Sadly New Line Cinema pops out another sequel every few years, each more poorly received. Hopefully "The Beginning" was the final nail in this series coffin.
