The Magnificent Five ride
|
This movie -also known as Today Its Me ,Tomorrow Its You-is a scaled down variant of The Magnificent Seven .The number of hired guns is reduced by two ,presumabaly on budgetary grounds ,and the motive is personal revenge rather than a defence of the oppressed but it remains in essence the same story.
Montgomery Ford-aka Brett Halsey-plays Kiowa ,who as the movie opens is being released from gaol having served a sentence for murdering his Native American wife .He did not commit the crime but was convicted at the instigation of Elfrego(Tatsuya Nakadau)the leader of a Comanchero gang and the man who actually did kill the woman .Kiowa sets out to exact revenge and hires 4 men to assist him ,including the mountainous Bannion(Bud Spencer)the slick gunslinging gambler Colt Moran(William Berger)and Jeff Milton(Wade Preston). They methodically set about tracking Elfrego and there are some edgy scenes as they stalk the gang across a variety of terrain and landscapes.Indeed ,the use of colour is striking in the movie -the action takes place in Autumn(Fall) and Winter and the photography makes strong use of muted colours and bleak landscapes to evoke a sense of chill and dread.
Dario Argento who co-scripted is best known as a director of violent "giallo" movies but here reveals himself to be no mean hand at the Western (he also co-authored Once Upon A Time In The West)and he ensures plenty of action and a few scenes which evoke the horror movie -as when the Comanchero gang are picked off while riding in a forest region.
The acting is fine and Spencer in particular downplays the broad comedic persona he deployed in the movies with Terence Hill ,while Wood /Halsey is effectively taciturn and moody
This is well worth watching and is always engrossing and absorbing |
