Finally, Liddell vs Silva; Plus St. Pierre-Hughes III
|
Before I review this event, I just want to explain that I am rating this event after watching the live PPV broadcast and only seeing one preliminary fight. Anyways, UFC 79: Nemesis was certaintly hyped for the highly anticipated battle between former UFC Champion Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell and former Pride Champion Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva. Also, Georges St. Pierre replaces injured champion Matt Serra to face Matt Hughes for a third time. Now to the fights:
The first televised fight that was featured was a grudge match years in the making. Rich Clementi and Melvin Guillard. Both have teased and talked a lot of trash about each other; even during and after the fight. This one ends in the first round with a decisive submission but the bad blood continues.
I was excited to see this next fight. Lyoto Machida takes on Rameau Sokoudjou. Sokoudjou teared through top fighters in Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona in 2007 in less than a minute and planned to continue that streak. Machida has never lost a fight prior to this, defeating the likes of BJ Penn and Rich Franklin. In the UFC, he has dominated Sam Hoger, David Heath, and Nakamura and now makes his run for contender status. This is mostly a ground fight that is controlled by the superior fighter and eventually ends with a submission in the second.
Eddie Sanchez takes on newcomer and former Pride member Soa Palelei. This fight is a snoozer but no disrespect intended towards Sanchez. HE is the one who tries to make this one exciting but a cautious and retreating fighter is never good in mixed martial arts. This one drags on to a third round stoppage.
NOW, FOR THE FIGHT WE ALL HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR. Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell battles Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva in the most important fight of their careers. Both fighters have been at the top of their respected organizations (Chuck in UFC, Silva in Pride) but lately have fallen down the ladder with back to back decisive losses (Liddell to Rampage & Jardine; Silva to Cro Cop & Henderson). Both men need a win to get back on track. After a cautious start at the beginning of the first round, these two go at like animals in some of the most brutal striking exchanges that I have seen in mixed martial arts. The crowd is at a frenzy like never before. Liddell seems to have the advantage with his reach advantage but Silva refuses to go down and lands some great shots of his own. Surprisingly, Liddell gets a few takedowns, Silva escapes, and they trade till the end. This one goes to the judges' decision but not one person was disappointed with this fight. This fight is worth getting the DVD when it comes out and I will get it myself.
Now for the main event, Georges St. Pierre and Matt Hughes face off for the third time, due to Welterweight Champion Matt Serra getting injured. This is for the Interim-Welterweight Title and the winner is declared in the second round by a perfect armbar submission, but before this occurred was dominate throughout.
The preliminary fight that was shown Nate Mohr against Manny Gamburyan, who lost his chance to win the TUF 5 contest due to injury. This time out, he shows why he should have won that event.
This was a great UFC event that had so much hype and it lived up. Liddell/Silva is the highlight and the fight that we wanted to see for a long time and as we expected, it lived up to the hype. |
