♥♥♥♥ 4 Stars For The Title Matches.
On paper, WrestleMania 23 looked like it was going to be the worst Mania ever. The good old Mania days were gone and very missed. However, this one did not fall as one would think. When given the opportunity, people need to realize that so many greats, like Kurt Angle, have left and others like Rey Mysterio and Triple H were injured to make this a perfect card. In all honesty, with the exception of three matches, this was one entertaining event. Now about the matches:

The opener was a great choice as it was a Money In The Bank Ladder Match featuring Edge, Randy Orton, The Hardy Boyz, King Booker, Finlay, CM Punk and Mr. Kennedy. With eight wrestlers and few ladders, this one looked ugly. It was better than expected. Not better than the last two MIB matches but it features some great high spots. The highlight is Jeff Hardy's leap from the ladder onto Edge, WOW it looked brutal. Nice start..

After such a solid opener, we get a horrid match between Kane and The Great Khali. I felt bad for Kane in this one. He tried his best to make this one look good and I felt he should have won but was victimized to a no talent freak like Khali.

United States Champion Chris Benoit, in his final WM match, takes on M.V.P. in a very nice technical matchup. Benoit sold himself in this one to make a great show but I {like everyone else} was shocked how good MVP did in this match. A nice ending to this one.

Before I review this next match, I have to say that I was angry this next match was not the main event, like so many other reviewers. Again, no disrespect to the WWE Title but this deserved to go last, not the middle of the card: IT DID FEATURE THE WINNER OF THE ROYAL RUMBLE, AFTER ALL.

It's the Title vs. the WM Streak as World Heavyweight Champion Batista battles The Undertaker in the MATCH OF THE NIGHT. This was a show stealer. Not Steamboat/Savage but really good. As one reviewer claimed, this one was a sprint but a very good sprint, and I agreed. These two hit power move after power move and came back for more. Batista, as we all know, is a horrible wrestler but Undertaker carried him very well and this match became very exciting. There are two great highlights in this match: Batista slamming Taker through the Announce Table and of course, Taker's huge dive over the top rope. The crowd was at a frenzy and ate this one up, as if it was the final bout. Undertaker finally got what he deserved for so long, becoming World Heavyweight Champion and advancing 15-0 at WrestleMania. A MUST SEE!!! This should have been the main event.

After the great battle, Taker/Batista, we get the ECW Originals against the New Breed. This one was disappointing for me. No Hardcore Rules?? No Eliminations?? Wasting great ECW veterans like RVD, Sabu, Dreamer & Sandman??? Why should I bother?? Decent to watch but a bit of a waste.

The most overhyped match of the night was The Battle Of The Billionaires Hair vs. Hair Match. Donald Trump's Bobby Lashley takes on Vince McMahon's Umaga with Stone Cold Steve Austin as the guest referee. I have a mixed opinion about this one. From a wrestling point of view, this was not that good but on an entertainment point of view, it was great. Austin and Shane McMahon's appearances were needed here and the aftermath is quite funny. Worth the time to watch for some funny entertainment.

The worst match of the night is the Women's Championship match between Melina and Ashley. Trish/Mickie classic, it was not. A DUD and should have been at the beginning of the card so we can forget about it.

The main event was the heavily hyped RAW title match. Long, reigning WWE Champion John Cena battles the "Heart-Break Kid", Shawn Michaels. This match was surprising for me, as not only did I enjoy it, but it was a wrestling marathon. As expected, Shawn carried the entire match, but by midway the match gets better with some great counters and back and forth action, including Michaels' cool looking moonsault to the outside of the ring. The problem was that it did not have that Mania Main Event feeling like Taker/Batista had earlier. Cena, just like Batista, is not a great wrestler but Michaels made him look good. Michaels showed good storytelling by working on Cena's leg and the piledriver on the steps. Unfortunately, Cena ,again, no-sold Michaels' offensive moves but was able to hang in there with HBK. The ending might disappoint most wrestling veterans, I know I was.

BUT anyways, a good way to end the show.I personally felt Shawn should have won this one but "Business is Business". Don't let the ending ruin it for you too much, this was a great match for what it was and a lot better than last WrestleMania's main event.

In the end, there are three versions of this event, ???. I bought the Blockbuster version for 15 bucks and being an Undertaker fan myself, this was worth the money. Extras include the ECW Originals vs. The New Breed in an Extreme Rules match, which was better than their Mania match. But anyways, WrestleMania 23 is not among the worst or the best but it is a decent buy for your collection especially if you love WrestleManias. Money In The Bank, Taker/Batista and Cena/HBK are the true highlights of this event.
