Mr. Woodcock description
Rhetorical question: Whats the only thing that can keep a potentially bad movies head above water? Good actors, or course. Sure, the Dodgeball-esque scenes of Billy Bob Thornton viciously pegging second-graders with a basketball are chuckle-inducing (It appeals to the Americas Funniest Home Videos lover in all of us), but the movie didnt quite live up to the promising plot. John Farley (Seann William Scott) plays a bestselling self-help author who was once a portly underachiever often bullied and terrorized by his militant (and potentially lawsuit-causing) gym teacher, Mr. Woodcock (Thornton). When hes invited to receive his Nebraska hometowns most coveted award, the corn cob key, he decides to pay his mother (Susan Sarandon) a visit. With horror, he discovers that shes planning on getting married to the sinister Mr. Woodcock. And, of course, the rest of the movie shows Johns unraveling as he tries with all his might (and "corny" predictability) to stop that from happening. The movie provides some good laughs, but its definitely on the B-list for the likes of these hilarious starring actors. --Jordan Thompson |

Not One Of Billy Bob's Best Flicks.
|
Mr. Woodcock is the story of a self help author who has to re-confront the past when his mom decides to marry the gym teacher who tortured him throughout his childhood. This movie has an all star cast featuring Billy Bob Thornton as the gym teacher, Seann William Scott as the self help author and Susan Sarandon as the mom. With a funny cast like that you would think the movie would be funny as well. Billy Bob is basically playing the exact same role as he did in "School For Scoundrals." Unfortunately he doesn't pull off the same comedic "toughness" as he does in that movie. Billy Bob comes off as tough but not really a loveable kind of tough. Sean William Scott's performance is very dull and he brings very little to the table. The writing is OK and there are a few funny parts but overall this pretty short movie (less than 1.5 hours) seems to drag on and on forever. I recommend watching this one but don't recommend buying it as I don't think you will want to see it more then once.
3 out of 5 stars. |
