Zatch Bell!, Vol. 1: The Lightning Boy From Another World description Kiyo Takamine, the hero of the long-running broadcast series Zatch Bell (2003), is a 14-year-old genius with a chip on his shoulder the size of Mt. Fuji: he doesn't like his junior high classmates and they don't like him. Kiyo's father asks him to look after Zatch Bell, a diminutive boy who possesses a book of spells; Zatch insists he's looking after Kiyo, and sets out to win him some friends. Kiyo discovers that when he invokes a spell from the book correctly, Zatch shoots lightning out of his mouth that zaps anything and anyone in its path. Zatch is a Mamodo, a child from another dimension, who will become king of his world if he and his human partner defeat the other 99 contenders loose on Earth. Purists complain that Zatch Bell has been edited for its American release, but the series was never a masterpiece, and the grade-school boys who constitute its obvious audience probably won't care.
