Good Blu-Ray player at a great price
|
I purchased the Sharp BD HP20U partially because I have a Sharp AQUOS HDTV, partically because of the reviews vs the SONY, and partially because of the price.
The Good:
Plays Blu Ray disc and DVD movies quite well.
Very quiet and reasonably attractive.
Has a USB port so firmware can be updated using a simple USB drive
Good price for a Blu ray player (at least on 03/03/08)
If you have a Sharp HDTV you won't really need the BD remote
The Bad:
The player plays DVD videos (ie 4:3) only with black bars on the sides - it does not provide an option to 'smart stretch' to fill the screen while it is upconverting.
It also introduced some weird color artifacts when playing DVD video cartoons (e.g. Futurama) that did not appear when playing DVD animated movies.
The player is a bit picky when it comes to USB drives for the firmware updates. I had to go out and buy an actual Sandisk drive to get it to recognize the firmware update I had downloaded from Sharp.
The AQUOS integration the description touts is something called AQUOSlink which happens over the HDMI cable. Unfortunately, my AQUOS HDTV knows nothing of this - it only deals with commands over the iLink cable. Check your manual before you buy if this is important to you.
