It's true they aren't very loud but they do get decent sound. I would say they are very similar to that of a desktop computer's speakers. How loud they are really all depends on hat you are plugging them into. For instance, if you plug it into your iPod vs. some large high energy system the one with more power is going to have the larger sound.
