I'm torn... great print quality but everything else is a nightmare!
|
Truthfully I am torn... this is a great printer at a great value (we just got one for our home office) but you have to be willing to put up with A LOT of hassle to get it.
First off... print quality is FANTASTIC. We do alot of high end graphics and this printer handles them better then any other comparable or even more expensive lasers (except of course commercial presses). Quick, quiet and very slick output.
BUT... it took us over 8 weeks to get ours! And, according to HP's own website, if you order on today it will not even ship for 4 weeks. Yikes! I don't need instant gratification but 4-8 weeks?!?! And that was only after calling the folks in Amazon's CS department everyday for 2 weeks! In truth it was Amazon's fault rather then HP's but still... 8 weeks!.
And... you can forget about anything approaching easy installation if you are putting this on a network. The CD would not autorun... HP's website would not download the file. The installation manual directs all network users to "step 19" but the only thing marked "19" is in Arabic (I *think* it's Arabic but it sure isn't English:) )and the eventual fix is to use HP's Printer Network Wizard which just installs one more process on to my taskbar! On top of it, the installation manual for this was definitely not written by someone whose primary language is English!
As far as support, again it was mixed bag. After being pre-screened by someone in India (twice) who kept asking me for "1 minute of my time" ( I assume she was asking me to "hold on"?) I was transfered no less then 5 times to finally make it to the correct tech department. Apparently there is a "special" department for the 3550n that is not in the normal laser jet section. But, after getting a tech on the phone they were great. After all was said and done It took over 3 hours to configure 2 computers to use this printer and over an hour was spent on the phone with HP.
So... the upshot? If you have more time then money this is an EXCELLENT printer. But if you're time is precious you might want to look at another printer (or dare I suggest another manufacturer?). |
